Dr. Shirley Chiou, or “Dr. Shirley”, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Northwestern University where she received a Bachelor’s of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. It was in college that she decided to pursue a career in dentistry after volunteering in General and Pediatric Dentistry offices.
She continued her studies at the University of Michigan Dental School, where she took on active roles of leadership, such as serving as Secretary for her dental school class and as Vice President of the Taft Philanthropic Society. One highlight of her dental school career was spending one summer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, providing free dental treatment for the children of migrant workers. Seeing the needs of migrant children and the impact she could make on patients who have limited access to oral healthcare made a lasting impression on Dr. Shirley.
On receiving her Doctorate of Dental Science degree, Dr. Chiou was accepted into a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She spent one year at the USC Dental School treating community patients and spent the next year at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, performing hospital dentistry.
Upon completion of her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 2006, Dr. Shirley continued her association with USC, serving as the Clinical Director for the USC/Queenscare Mobile Clinic. These mobile units partnered with the Los Angeles School District to provide treatment to children through school based programs.
In 2007, Dr. Chiou and her family moved to Boston, Massachusetts where she spent three years in private practice. In 2009, she completed the board examination requirements to receive her Diplomate Status from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Chiou and her husband have three children and reside locally. Though not a native Houstonian, she has grown to love Southern hospitality, the amazing BBQ and Tex mex, and all things Houston rodeo. Dr. Shirley is happiest hanging out with her family, whether it be movie marathons, watching her son play baseball, having game nights, or going on runs along the Bayou.
She will never get tired of pediatric dentistry because her patients always keep her laughing. From the one year old to the teen adolescent, Dr. Shirley appreciates the challenges and rewards of treating each patient and their family with care and respect.
